This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of spelling and grammar conventions associated with certain suffixes learnt in the Year 4 unit 'Year 4: Verb and adjective suffixes'. Here, pupils review verb, adjective and noun suffixes, like -ing, -ed, -s, -ies, -es, -ves, -ate, -en, -ify, -ise, -ity, -ness, -ary, -ery -al, -ic, -ful and -less, reviewing how the addition of a suffix can affect the grammar of a word, for example by changing its word class or tense. This unit prepares pupils for further suffix work in the Year 5 unit 'Year 5: Noun suffixes, letter strings and homophones'.
