Why this why now

This teacher led unit builds on the previous learning in the curriculum in which pupils have widened their understanding of art, craft and design. They have developed an appreciation of its cultural and historical contexts and have developed their critical thinking, innovation, and taken responsibility for their creative decisions. This is the right point for students to become more independent and make connections with their process and the world around them.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Different approaches to annotation and use of sketchbook as a space to communicate thoughts and reflections.
  • Understanding of how to apply knowledge of visual elements to communicate an idea or theme.
  • Skills in self-reflection and evaluation.
  • Experience of discussing and responding to artwork.
  • Foundational knowledge of the elements and principles of art including colour theory.

First sustained project: working from a theme

This is an independent, pupil-led unit where pupils develop their own creative process. Having learned the key components of shaping an artistic voice, they will now make choices about themes, techniques, and processes, articulating and evaluating their artistic journey.
