Description

This unit focuses on understanding similarities and differences, recognising and challenging gender stereotypes, stopping sexism in school and including everyone in friendships and activities. Pupils learn to celebrate diversity, challenge unfair treatment and build inclusive friendships.

At Year 4, pupils are likely to be refining their social relationships and understanding of friendships. Building on their earlier lessons about friendships, this unit is timely as it highlights that friendships can vary widely. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop an appreciation for different types of friendships, fostering inclusivity and empathy in their social interactions.

  1. We are all similar, we are all different

  • Pupils should know that friendships are built on kindness, trust and respect, and that good friends listen, share and help one another regardless of differences.
  • Pupils should understand that friends can disagree and that disagreements can be resolved in positive and respectful ways without damaging the friendship.
  • Pupils should be familiar with the idea that healthy friendships are welcoming and inclusive, do not exclude others and treat everyone with respect.
