Description

This unit provides strategies for seeking help when feeling unsafe, understanding and resisting peer pressure, recognising when to seek help and developing confidence to assert boundaries. Pupils learn to feel empowered and know multiple ways to access support for their safety and wellbeing.

In Year 5, pupils become increasingly aware of personal safety and develop greater independence. Building on previous understanding of boundaries and safety, this unit provides critical strategies for seeking help when feeling unsafe, including resisting peer pressure. This is timely as pupils face increasing independence and social pressures. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop the confidence to recognise unsafe situations, assert their boundaries, resist pressure, and seek support through multiple channels.

  1. Understanding peer pressure
  2. Finding support when I feel unsafe
  3. Feeling powerful

  • Pupils should know that their body belongs to them and can recognise the difference between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact.
  • Pupils should understand from previous learning that healthy relationships make them feel safe, respected and valued, and can identify when relationships feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Pupils should be familiar with multiple trusted adults such as parents, carers, teachers and school staff who can help them if they feel worried or unsafe.
  • Pupils should know from earlier learning that everyone has the right to feel safe and that seeking help is important, positive and brave.
