Description

This unit explores the forces shaping online experiences, teaching pupils to critically evaluate digital content. Pupils learn about online influencers, how algorithms work, their own power online and the role of data, developing understanding of how and why their online experience is curated.

At Year 5, pupils are likely to be aware of different types of online content. Building on previous knowledge of media influence, this unit examines the forces that shape their online experiences. This is timely as pupils need to understand how algorithms, influencers and data collection affect what they see. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop a critical understanding of content curation, commercial motivations and their digital power.

  1. Understanding online influencers
  2. How algorithms influence what we see
  3. Understanding my power online
  4. The power of data

  • Pupils should be familiar with strategies for critically evaluating online information such as checking sources, looking for evidence and asking trusted adults.
  • Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 that personal information and images should be kept private online and understand basic concepts of privacy and consent.
