Description

This unit explores the importance of family connections, and the diversity of family structures. Pupils will learn that all families are special and characterised by love and care, regardless of differences.

At Year 1, pupils are beginning to understand their social world beyond their immediate family. This unit builds on their early experiences, helping them recognise that families come in many forms. It fosters empathy by teaching pupils to respect different family structures whilst understanding that love and care characterise all families. By exploring these concepts now, pupils develop foundational understanding of healthy families and relationships.

  1. Families are special
  2. Family connections
  3. Different types of families

  • Pupils can identify members of their own family and describe simple ways that families care for one another.
  • Pupils should understand that adults such as parents, carers and teachers have important roles in keeping them safe and happy.
  • Pupils should know from early years that families are made up of different people and that families can look different from each other.
