Description

This unit teaches pupils to plan a balanced and healthy week, incorporating nutrition and physical activity. Pupils learn practical skills for creating healthy meals, planning enjoyable physical activities and building sustainable routines.

At Year 6, pupils are taking more responsibility for their health routines as they prepare for secondary school. Building on previous knowledge of nutrition and physical activity, this unit teaches practical skills for planning a balanced and healthy week. This is timely as pupils transition to increased autonomy over lifestyle choices. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop sustainable skills for creating healthy meals, building regular physical activity and maintaining long-term health and wellbeing.

  1. Creating a healthy meal
  2. Enjoying an active week

  • Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 that eating a variety of foods from different food groups and staying physically active contribute to good health.
  • Pupils should understand from earlier learning the principles of a balanced diet including appropriate portions, limiting processed foods and drinking plenty of water.
  • Pupils should be familiar with the benefits of physical activity from Year 4 and Year 5 including improved fitness, mood, sleep and overall health and wellbeing.
  • Pupils may know from Key Stage 2 that building regular exercise and healthy eating into daily and weekly routines helps maintain long-term physical and mental health.
