Description

This unit teaches basic first aid and emergency response skills, empowering pupils to help in emergencies. Pupils learn practical first aid for common injuries, how to respond to head injuries safely, understand asthma and its management and develop confidence to call emergency services effectively.

At Year 6, pupils are becoming more responsible and likely to be given more independence. Building on previous understanding of safety and health, this unit teaches basic first aid and emergency response skills. This is timely as pupils develop the maturity to respond effectively in emergencies. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop practical, life-saving skills, confidence to act in emergencies, an understanding of conditions like asthma, and the ability to seek help appropriately.

  1. Basic first aid
  2. Head injuries
  3. What is asthma?

  • Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 about common hazards and basic safety practices to prevent injuries at home, school and outdoors.
  • Pupils should understand from prior learning how to make an emergency call and should know the importance of staying calm and giving clear information.
  • Pupils may be familiar with basic first aid concepts from earlier learning such as cooling burns under water and applying pressure to stop bleeding.
  • Pupils should know from Key Stage 2 about trusted adults and emergency services who can help in medical emergencies and understand when to seek immediate help.
