  • Online safety

Description

This unit covers understanding the rules for online friendship and kindness, identifying when questions are too personal, recognising uncomfortable feelings online, and knowing how to respond. It also includes enjoying favourite online activities safely and creating positive online experiences.

At Year 3, pupils may interact more frequently in digital spaces through games, videos and messaging. Building on their learning from Year 1 and Year 2, this unit extends to creating positive online experiences through kindness and respect. This is timely as pupils develop greater independence online and need skills to recognise when interactions feel uncomfortable. By exploring these concepts now, pupils develop understanding of how to be kind digital citizens, protect their information, recognise when to seek help and foster supportive online interactions, essential for their wellbeing.

  1. Our favourite things online
  2. What to do if we feel uncomfortable online
  3. The rules for friendship online
  4. Deciding if a question is too personal
  5. Keeping safe in the online world

  • Pupils should know from previous learning that the internet can be used for playing, learning and communicating with others but requires safety awareness.
  • Pupils should understand that people online may not always be who they say they are and that they should talk to a trusted adult if something online feels wrong or uncomfortable.
  • Pupils may know that the same principles of kindness and respect that apply in person also apply online and that unkind behaviour can hurt others.
