Description

This unit explores addiction, with particular emphasis on smoking and vaping. Pupils learn the facts about smoking, vaping and nicotine products and understand associated health risks, including addiction.

At Year 5, pupils are becoming more aware of health risks and may encounter smoking, vaping or substances in their communities. Building on previous understanding of personal safety and health, this unit explores addiction, smoking and vaping with age-appropriate facts. This is timely as pupils need accurate information before facing peer pressure or exposure. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop an understanding of addiction, health risks and skills to make informed choices and resist pressure.

  1. The facts about smoking and vaping
  2. Understanding addiction

  • Pupils should know from Key Stage 1 that some substances can harm their bodies and understand basic safety around medicines, household chemicals and other potentially dangerous substances.
  • Pupils should understand that their body belongs to them and they have the right to make choices about what goes into their body, including the right to say no.
  • Pupils should be familiar with the idea that rules and laws exist to protect people's health and safety including age restrictions on certain products.
  • Pupils can identify trusted adults such as parents, carers, teachers and health professionals who can provide accurate information about health and substances.
