  • Online safety

Description

This unit emphasises positive and healthy online interactions, helping pupils balance their digital and offline lives. Pupils learn about online dangers, navigating group chats safely, managing online comparisons and developing strategies to thrive online while maintaining wellbeing.

At Year 5, many pupils are spending more time online. Building on previous learning about online behaviour and safety, this unit emphasises positive and healthy online interactions. This is timely as pupils face increasing online pressures, including group chat dynamics and social comparisons. By learning these concepts now, pupils develop skills to recognise dangers, navigate social situations, manage their well-being and balance their digital and offline lives.

  1. Dangers to watch out for in the online space
  2. Group chats
  3. Online comparisons
  4. Thriving online

  • Pupils should know that not everyone online is who they say they are and can recognise warning signs of unsafe contact or inappropriate behaviour online.
  • Pupils should understand that personal information, images and messages should be kept private and that once shared online content can be circulated permanently.
  • Pupils can critically evaluate online content including understanding fake news, bias, commercial motivations and the influence of algorithms on what they see.
  • Pupils may recognise that online relationships are different from face-to-face relationships and understand the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries online.
  • Pupils should be able to identify multiple trusted adults they can talk to if something online makes them feel worried, uncomfortable or unsafe.
