Description

This unit covers keeping the body clean through good hygiene, understanding how diseases spread and prevention strategies, staying safe during summer including sun safety and learning how to respond to stings, allergies and anaphylaxis.

In Year 4, pupils are becoming more aware of health and hygiene and are capable of taking responsibility for preventing illness. Building on previous learning about personal hygiene and safety, this unit extends to disease prevention, recognising serious health situations such as allergic reactions and responding appropriately. This is timely as pupils gain independence and need practical strategies to stay healthy. By exploring these concepts now, pupils develop the habits and knowledge necessary to prevent illness, respond to emergencies, and protect their health.

  1. Keeping our bodies clean and healthy
  2. Preventing the spread of disease
  3. Sunburn, stings, allergies and anaphylaxis

  • Pupils should know from earlier learning that good hygiene practices such as washing hands regularly with soap, bathing and keeping clean help prevent germs from spreading.
  • Pupils should understand from previous learning that germs such as bacteria and viruses can make people ill and that simple actions can help stop them spreading.
  • Pupils should be familiar with basic sun safety such as wearing sunscreen, hats and staying in the shade during hot weather.
  • Pupils can identify trusted adults such as teachers, parents and school staff who can help them if they are injured or feeling unwell.
