Why this why now

This unit further develops pupils' verb lexicon, introducing singular forms of the high frequency verb 'faire' to do, make, with negation and 'qu'est-ce que' questions, before introducting its idiomatic use with weather expressions. Singular 'faire' and 'jouer' with different sports are also taught, along with plural possessives 'mes, tes'. Building on pupils’ use of simple and compound sentences, pupils learn to create longer sentences with subordinate clauses, using ‘quand’, when.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils have secure knowledge of the most common sound-symbol correspondences.
  • Pupils know how to use a range of irregular and regular-er verbs in the present to say and write simple sentences.
  • Pupils know how to use ne...pas to negate verbs in the present tense.
  • Pupils know to add the interrogative 'où' to 'est-ce que' to ask 'where' questions.
  • Pupils know the singular possessive adjectives 'mon, ma' and 'ton, ta'.

What I and others do: 'faire' singular persons, qu'est-ce que

In this unit, pupils use singular 'faire' and 'jouer' to talk about activities and sports. They extend sentences, using subordinate clauses with 'quand'. and use 'qu'est-ce que' and quel/quelle to ask what sports others do. Pupils further embed knowledge of a range of previously learnt sounds.
