This unit uses and builds on pupils' understanding of war poetry and comparison from 'Comparing poetry from the First World War'. In this unit, pupils look at conflict from a greater range of perspectives, and look at poetry from a wider range of wars. They complete more sustained and nuanced comparisons, and generate their own comparative points. They also develop and hone their expertise in writing comparative paragraphs and essays. This unit prepares pupils for the anthology's 'continued study' unit where they will look at more complex poems and make nuanced comparisons across all poems.

'Power and Conflict'

In this unit, pupis explore 12 of the 15 poems from the 'Power and Conflict' anthology. Pupils complete two lessons about each poem: one on understanding and one on analysis. Pupils study the poems in three groups, and they pause after each group to compare how those poems present common themes.
