Anatomy and physiology: the cardio-respiratory system

  • Think: knowledge of healthy, active living

Description

This unit will examine the structure and function of both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It includes the correct anatomical names and location of different chambers, valves and blood vessels as well as the pathway of air through to the alveoli and how gaseous exchange occurs.

Pupils will already have a basic understanding of how the heart and lungs work to provide oxygen for life and energy for exercise. This unit cements that knowledge from key stage 3 PE and biology before further unpacking the application of complex anatomical and physiological terminology that forms the foundation of any future sports science study and also supports deeper understanding of health, fitness and sporting performance. Combined with previous knowledge about the musculo-skeletal system, pupils are put in a strong position to later understand aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

  1. Structure of the cardiovascular system
  2. Blood vessels, blood cells and the vascular shunt
  3. A practical exploration of the pathway of blood
  4. The cardiac cycle
  5. The relationship between heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output
  6. Air pathway from the atmosphere to alveoli and gaseous exchange
  7. The mechanics of breathing
  8. A practical exploration of how the cardio-respiratory systems work together
