Net and wall games: maintain and win a rally through pickleball

6 lessons

Threads

  • Connect: teamwork and leadership
  • Move: performance and competition

Description

This unit will explore basic skills to start, maintain and win a rally in racket sports. Pupils will learn the specific rules to pickleball and develop persistence when improving racket skills to play in pairs. They will also work on observation skills to officiate and improve performance.

Pupils will already have explored basic bat and ball (net/ wall) games at primary school. This requires pupils to transfer and apply previously learnt principles of attack and defence to consider how they apply in a different context. They will need to persist with tasks set and develop their ability to observe others to officiate and/ or coach. Later in net and wall games they will develop basic skills and hand-eye coordination further whilst also learning specific rules and techniques for badminton and tennis.

  1. Ball familiarisation and battleships serving
  2. Cooperating to build the longest rally
  3. A movement focus on the ready position, split step and returning to the middle
  4. Forehands, backhands and volleys in action
  5. Outwitting your opponent to win a point
  6. Playing games, keeping score and competing fairly
