6 lessons

Threads

  • Feel: personal and emotional
  • Move: application of tactics, strategies and compositional ideas

Description

This unit explores a variety of tactics and strategies that can be transferred from other team games to hockey. Pupils’ persistence will be tested as they learn to apply the rules and find ways to tackle safely, strike the ball cleanly and avoid kicking the ball.

Pupils will already have developed ways to adapt skills, tactics and strategies from various forms of football but this unit places an implement in their hand which adds an extra dimension of challenge. This unit provides an opportunity to transfer some knowledge and skills from racket sports as well as other field games in terms of movement off the ball, creating space and outwitting opponents. Later in invasion games they will apply more advanced tactics and strategies.

  1. Dribbling, passing and receiving with control
  2. Attacking play
  3. Outwitting opponents
  4. Positioning and team structure
  5. Game strategies: how to refine them
  6. Thinking Thursdays and lessons learnt from England Hockey
