Description

This unit explores ways to adapt tactics and strategies in full-contact sports like rugby. Pupils will learn how to respond to specific types of breakdown such as free kicks, rucks, mauls and scrums as they seek solutions to gain territory, maintain momentum and counterattack.

Pupils will already have explored a wider range of tactics and strategies to include dispersal, penetration, support and screening in attack whilst defensive strategies of delay, compactness, depth, balance and control/ restraint will have been applied in a range of scenarios and specific sports like football, netball and rugby. This unit takes that understanding into a variety of full-contact situations that require great teamwork and the confidence to engage in tackles/ full body contact. Pupils will also learn about sporting values and fair play, which is developed in many future units.

  1. Gaining confidence in contact
  2. Tackling and getting into a defensive line
  3. Defending by denying space and time
  4. Counterattack and momentum swings
  5. Respond to challenges with persistence and focus
